Established in 1928 and headquatered in Birmingham, Alabama this company is currently a division of Kinder Morgan. Southern Natural Gas Company was a division of Sonat Inc until 1999, when Sonat and El Paso Corporation merged. El Paso was acquired by Kinder Morgan in 2012. Southern Natural Gas Company is a 6.900 miles pipeline system that encompasses natural gas basins in  Louisiana, Alabama and Mississipi and market areas in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississipi, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and Tenesse, including the metropolitan areas of Atlanta and Birmingham, being one of the principal natural gas transporters for the fast growing southern market.

  • In Benton, South Carolina, a pipeline leak occurred that spilled an estimated of 370.000 gallons of gasoline on a farmer’s land before the leak was detected. No injuries or fatalities were reported. The owners of the land filed a lawsuit claiming their property, that had been listed for sale as commercial property before the accident, suffered irreparable damage and is now devalued.
  • In 2010, a natural gas leak occurred when external corrosion caused a rupture a second failure mechanism, causing damages in a three inches PVC municipal water line serving about twenty houses south of the location of the affected pipeline. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
  • A pipe ruptured when a failure appeared in a four wrinkle underbend configuration. High pressure natural gas escaped and created a narrow hole, minimal property damage was reported.
  • A pipeline ruptured in a cotton field, resulting in an ignition and fire. There were no reported injuries, fatalities or evacuations. Fire and rescue personnel were deployed to the area and Southern Natural Gas personnel responded to the event by closing all valves necessary to shut in the pipeline segment.
