Saipem is an Italian oil and gas industry contractor, founded in 1957 , it was a subsidiary of the Italian energy company Eni that owned approximately thirty percent of its shares until 2016. Saipem started operating independently in the 1960’s and has been contracted to design several pipelines, it registers a total of thirty two thousand employees and revenue of € 8.526 billion.
- In May 2019, an explosion was reported in the vessel “Israfil Huseynov” during pipelaying operations in the Caspian Sea. A total of fourteen workers were transported to the hospital, seven of which were placed on intensive care, one of the employees died.
- During the laying of a subsea pipeline between Algeria and Spain three workers died, one worker was reported missing and three more were injured. This accident occurred due to a crane failure, the press release informed that there was no reported explosions during the event.
- Saipem’s Perro Negro 6’s three legs collapsed, causing the rig to tilt and start taking water, these occurred during the positioning of the rig on a location between the coasts of Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Six crew member were reported to have sustained minor injuries. The rig sank after capsizing.
- On September 4 2012, the Scarabeo 8 mobile, semi-submersible facility ballast tank was unintentionally filled suffering a 5.7 degree list. The situation was solved in an hour, but an alarm was triggered and the one hundred and forty workers on board were mustered. No injuries were reported.
- In February 2017, an employee died, one suffered serious injuries and other three were ported to have suffered minor injuries on sea platform hired by Saipem. An explosion occurred during the testing of the oilfield’s gas flow system. No indepent party checked or approved if the functionality of the completed installation was satisfactory and ready to use.
