Washington Industries that Threatened Asbestos Exposure and a Mesothelioma Diagnosis
There are a number of industries that are prevalent across Washington where workers could have been exposed to asbestos. Some of these industries include:
Mining
Asbestos mines were located in Skagit County and Okanogan County. Workers extracted asbestos from these mines. In the Okanogan County mine, asbestos was woven together and incorporated into paint and plaster products. Workers who mined these materials came in direct contact with asbestos and were at a heightened risk of developing mesothelioma.
Shipyards
Shipyard and dry dock workers were also at an increased risk of being exposed to asbestos because many components in ships like insulation, gaskets and pipes were covered with the material. Workers at risk of developing mesothelioma include pipefitters, plumbers, boilermakers, welders and electricians who worked on these ships.
Timber
Timber has long been at the heart of Washington’s economy. Asbestos-containing materials were often found in paper and pulp mills where they were used to insulate the machinery and walls of these facilities. They were also used in the paper-making process as drying felts, adhesives and other materials.
Aluminum
Aluminum production has been popular since World War II. Because the manufacturing process of aluminum involves high heats, asbestos was often used during the process since it is resistant to heat and fire. INTALCO Aluminum, Kaiser Aluminum, ALCOA Aluminum, and Harvey Aluminum have all been linked to possible asbestos exposure. Several mesothelioma lawsuits have been filed in Washington by former aluminum plant workers.
Petrochemicals
Washington is home to multiple oil refineries where asbestos was included in hoods, fire doors, hoods and gloves.
