Salt-Lake-City

Utah has a three-year statute of limitations to file a lawsuit from the date that you were diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease. If your family member died from an asbestos-related disease, you have two years from the date of death to file a lawsuit against the responsible parties. This drastically limits the amount of time you have to file a lawsuit against those who caused your mesothelioma. It is important that you contact an experienced mesothelioma attorney to learn about your rights and your options for pursuing compensation for the damages you have sustained.

Vermiculite Intermountain and Intermountain Products in Salt Lake City

Two jobsites that most placed workers at risk for asbestos exposure in Salt Lake City were Vermiculite Intermountain and Intermountain Products. Both of these plants processed asbestos from the infamous W.R. Grace’s vermiculite mine in Libby, Montana for more than 40 years. This mine extracted vermiculite that was contaminated with asbestos that grew beside it and sent thousands of tons of this contaminated material around the country. The Utah facilities were located near Utah Power and Light, which later purchased part of the Vermiculite Intermountain facility. Intermountain Products stopped operations in 1987. Soil and gravel at the Utah Power and Light facility was found to contain asbestos. In 2004, the Environmental Protection Agency launched the abatement project in 2004, during which time the facility remained open and employees continued to work.

Mesothelioma and Asbestos Lawsuits in Salt Lake City Utah

Salt Lake City, Utah has not seen many asbestos cases that have seen their way through to a verdict. However, in 2010, one significant verdict was made on behalf of a woman who was exposed to asbestos while completing home renovations with her father. The Salt Lake City jury awarded her more than $5.2 million in damages. The award included $1.4 million in economic damages and more than $3.7 in non-economic damages.

When she was a teenager, the woman helped her father with home renovations. He would apply and shave down a joint compound to smooth out the joints in the walls. She would then clean up the resulting dust and debris. The joint compound product contained asbestos. The woman was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2007.  The defendants in the case included Georgia-Pacific, LLP, Hamilton Materials, Inc. and Union Carbide Corp. The jury concluded that Georgia-Pacific and Hamilton Materials produced “defectively designed” joint compound that included asbestos fiber products that Union Carbide produced.
