Columbia SC Military Bases & Veteran Asbestos Exposure

Fort Jackson Army Base is located in Columbia, South Carolina. This base serves as a general training camp. Roughly 36,000 soldiers train at the base every year. The base spans an impressive 52,000 acres and boasts 100 training ranges and 1,160 buildings. The base is home to the Soldier Support Institute, the Center for Army Chaplaincy and the School of Credibility Assessment. The base was established in 1917. It has been activated and deactivated several times over history. However, the base is open today and is considered the largest training unit of the Army.

Army personnel may have been exposed to asbestos throughout their military career because this material was used to construct bases and was also used in components in military vehicles.

Asbestos & Mesothelioma Lawsuits in Richland County South Carolina

In 2013, a Richland County jury delivered a $38 million verdict to a 74-year-old man who had worked as a maintenance man and millwright at various facilities from the 1960s to 2000. He dismantled pumps and valves that required him to handle corroded gaskets and packing material made of asbestos. Due to this exposure, he developed testicular mesothelioma. He originally sued 13 companies, but 8 of them were dismissed because their products could not be linked to his worksite. Two of the companies entered into confidential settlements with him before the verdict. The jury awarded the man $10 million in compensatory damages, $1 million to the man’s wife for loss of consortium and $27 million in punitive damages.
