Cleveland Mesothelioma and Asbestos Lawsuits

Given the large number of companies that used asbestos here, Cleveland, Ohio has some significant asbestos verdicts in its history.

In August 2018, a Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas jury returned a verdict of nearly $8.3 million against Union Carbide Corporation based on asbestos exposure to a man who used a joint compound manufactured by Georgia Pacific. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a career electrician who was exposed to the product from 1969 to 1977. After being diagnosed with mesothelioma, the man died about one year later.

An English professor at Tri-C’s East Campus was awarded approximately $27.5 million by a Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court jury, representing the largest verdict of its nature in Ohio. The man was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2012 after being subject to second-hand exposure when his father brought asbestos dust home after working at the Eaton Airflex Brake Company for more than 31 years. His father died from lung cancer in 1994. The jury found the defendant’s brake products were defective and primarily responsible for the professor’s cancer.

In 2008, a 64-year-old railroad signal maintainer who developed lung cancer after drilling holes in backboards that contained asbestos was awarded $2.7million by a Cleveland, Ohio jury against the railroad defendant.

In 2018, a Saginaw, Michigan jury found against Cleveland-based Ferro Engineering and awarded a $1.8 million verdict, plus costs, to the family of a man who developed lung cancer. The man was a steel worker for 30 years and was diagnosed with 15 years after he retired from his job. The jury found that the company was aware their products caused cancer yet failed to protect consumers.
