New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina and Asbestos

One unique form of asbestos exposure in New Orleans, Louisiana is due to Hurricane Katrina. The hurricane hit Louisiana’s largest city on August 29, 2005. Flood waters destroyed thousands of homes and buildings throughout New Orleans. The Environmental Protection Agency warned that more than 100 different pollutants could be in these flood waters, drinking water and the air due to the hurricane, including asbestos. Many people assisting with cleanup efforts were exposed to asbestos because asbestos fibers were dislodged from older homes and buildings due to the hurricane winds and flood waters. Additionally, the EPA permitted potentially asbestos-contaminated materials to be disposed of in landfills without additional precautions being undertaken.
