Honolulu Hawaii Mesothelioma Lawsuits

Asbestos cases that end in a verdict in Honolulu, Hawaii are not that common. However, there have been some noticeable results in news reports, including one pioneer case brought in 1980 by the daughter and several other family members of a man who had died from lung cancer due to asbestos dust and fibers he breathed while working at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard from 1941 to 1971. The family brought the claim against 27 manufacturers and distributors of asbestos products. The jury awarded the family approximately $213,000 in compensatory damages and $500,000 in punitive damages.

In a 1990 case found in the news, a Hawaii jury awarded $5.37 million to an insulator assistant who developed mesothelioma after being repeatedly exposed to asbestos during his career. He performed insulation jobs at National Petro in 1953 and 1962, during which time he was exposed to an Owens-Illinois, Inc. insulation product that contained asbestos in it. The insulator filed a lawsuit against various companies after he was diagnosed with cancer in 1989. Several companies settled out of court for an undisclosed amount of compensation. Two companies sought to appeal the verdict, but the U.S. Court of Appeals upheld it.
