Can Asbestos Exposure Cause Sleep Apnea?

There is no existing evidence definitively linking asbestos exposure to sleep apnea.  While some anecdotal evidence suggests possible connections between some conditions also linked to asbestos exposure and incidences of sleep apnea, to date there have no but any significant peer-reviewed studies linking the two.

The most likely causes of sleep apnea have to do with factors of obesity and aging.

That said, the Veteran’s Administration (VA) has seen a significant spike in disability claims related to sleep apnea in recent years, and many claims have cited both asbestosis and sleep apnea as conditions requiring relief.  It is possible that future research will uncover a correlative or causal link between asbestos exposure and sleep apnea.
