Fort Richardson was built in 1940 as the headquarters of the United States Army in Alaska near Anchorage. It served as a holding center during World War II. It later served as a barracks for 500 soldiers and included a rifle range, a hospital and bachelor officer quarters. For many years, the location served as home to the only airborne infantry battalion in the Pacific Theater. The base is home to the Alaska National Guard. Today, it makes up 62,000 acres of land, including space for family housing, a drop zone, firing ranges, training areas and offices.

In 2005, the base was unified with Elmendorf Air Force Base and became a joint base. Elmendorf Air Force Base was built in 1940 and served as a major and permanent military airfield by Anchorage. It served as a strategic base during World War II and the Cold War, serving as a main air logistics center, staging area and air operations.

Former Army or Air Force members could have been exposed to dangerous levels of asbestos because this material was used in many applications, including as insulation and construction materials for barracks, mess halls, offices and other military buildings. It was also used in planes and military vehicles.
