The History of Calumet’s San Antonio Refinery

Incorporated in 1916, Calumet Specialty Products Partner LP is a US based company that specializes in the manufacturing of aliphatic naphthenic oils, solvents, paraffinic oils, and paraffin waxes. The company’s San Antonio refinery was built in 1955, but expanded and developed a great deal since this date. The San Antonio refinery now employs 95 people and has the capacity to produce approximately 20,000 crude oil barrels per day, which is expected to increase in number because the plant is currently undergoing a $150 million dollar upgrade. Oil refined by the plant is used to create a variety of products including ultra-low sulfur diesel, jet fuel, regular gasoline, and a variety of other types of fuels. Individuals should note that this refinery is the only refinery in the San Antonio area, which presents the City of San Antonio with an unprecedented risk.

Injuries and Fatalities at Calumet’s San Antonio Refinery

There have been a number of fires of varying sizes and degrees at Calumet’s San Antonio refinery over the last few years.

In September of 2014, a fire at the refinery closed the facility for a day. Refinery workers had taken down a crude oil unit and were draining oil from the equipment through a hose that had

sprung a leak when the oil was noted to be hot enough to auto-ignite. Although workers closed the appropriate valve, the fires lasted for five minutes .Fortunately, no one was seriously injured or killed due to this fire. San Antonio’s Fire Department responded to this fire, but first responders were able to adequately handle the fire.

In December of 2015, the San Antonio Fire Department to a fiery chimney at the refinery. Heavy smoke was first spotted while individuals worked to contain a “heater stack” fire at the refinery. These flames were particularly difficult for firefighters to extinguish because the flames were fueled by hydrocarbon liquid and hydrogen. The exact cause of the fire, however, is unknown. This event comes after a September 2014 fire during which workers struggled to extinguish a fire that been created during maintenance.

Given the presence of large amounts of hazardous material, even the smallest flame at a refinery has the potential to cause a fire of catastrophic size or even an explosion. These fires can be caused for many reasons including lack of training by employees or lack of or improper maintenance equipment at the refinery.
