Oil Rig Accidents and NCX Workers

Situations in which accidents have been reported involving NCX workers include the following:

  • In 1996, an NCX crew had just finished removing a portion of grating on the cellar deck when sparks from the torch ignited the exhaust of a natural gas powered diaphragm pump. While the crew was shutting off gas and activating the ESD and carrying handheld fire extinguishers to the fire, a worker stepped through the hole in the grating and fell to the boat landing. There also cases of falls involving workers who failed to obey posted warning material as well as scaffolding that collapsed because it was improperly constructed.
  • In 1996, slags and sparks fell due to welders cutting and replacing the grating on a sump deck. The gas powered wash-down pump stroked several times fast, venting gas, which was ignited from the slag and sparks. The fire was quickly extinguished but the welding supervisor received burns that fatally damaged his internal organs. In addition to the use of combustible materials on oil rigs, fires also occur due to adverse weather conditions as well as chemical leaks.
  • In 2005, a small fire occurred at NCX while workers were repairing damaged grating on the cellar deck level at the A platform. A small amount of gas undetected at the time was also leaking from the conductor pipe of the well. The leaking gas was ignited when a welder attempting to cut some damaged grating around the well.

How Asbestos Can Harm Oil Rig Workers

In many cases, workers are only they are aware that they have contracted a deadly cancer due to asbestos exposure years after working in the proximity of the material.
