Murphy Exploration Workers and Accidents
Reports of workers having been injured include the following events:
- In 1997, a crane fell overboard on a Murphy Platform. As the workers begin to lift the crane, the crane had metal fatigue on the pedestal. The crane fell overboard and the tree stayed in place on the well. The worker operating the crane had to jump out of the way to avoid being stuck and either injured or broke some ribs. Each year, there are numerous accidents on oil rigs that involve workers who are struck by equipment or trapped between two pieces of equipment.
- In 1996, a crane operator was using the fast line with a nylon strap to relocate valves to the opposite side of the blowout preventer stack. There was slack in the nylon strap which caused travel in the fast line ball. High wind struck the ball which caused a section to fall from the rig floor and injured a worker’s hand as well as created a compound fracture to his leg and a laceration to his shoulder. A large number of accidents occur aboard oil rigs because workers fail to properly follow safety precautions.
The Danger That Asbestos Poses To Oil Rig Workers
For many years, companies in the oil and gas industry used asbestos even though they knew prolonged or frequent exposure to the material has the potential to result in several deadly conditions including asbestosis and mesothelioma. In a large number of cases, workers are exposed to this deadly material without even being aware of its hazardous nature until a medical diagnosis is made years or even decades later.
