Accidents Involving Workers at IP Petroleum

The following accidents have purportedly occurred at IP Petroleum operated oil rigs and platforms:

  • In 1999, a fire occurred at an IP Petroleum rig when a worker noticed smoke coming from a glycol reboiler which require a chemical fire extinguisher to put out. Fires on oil rigs can be caused by numerous factors including equipment malfunctions and improperly contained flammable liquids. In the most serious situations, fires can also trigger explosions on oil rigs, which given the confined space can be deadly.
  • In another accident that occurred in 2000, workers were transitioning to being located on a fixed platform. During this maneuver, the crane basket carrying the workers was jerked up and spun out of control resulting in the basket being thrown violently and causing the workers to both fall onto the fixed platform and the ocean. This accident demonstrates just one of the many ways that equipment can malfunction and harm workers. Other examples include equipment that contains faulty wiring as well as workers who are not properly trained on how to use safety equipment.
  • Another type of accident that has been reported relate to falls, which can occur when ladders are not properly secured or when scaffolding is not properly assembled. Falls can also occur because construction areas are not properly marked or when workers fail to obey posted signage.

How Asbestos Can Harm Oil Rig Workers

Companies engaged in petroleum exploration and production for many years used asbestos for numerous purposes including insulation despite knowing that asbestos can cause medical conditions. This practice, however, ceased when state and federal laws were passed supporting medical research which had determined that frequent or prolonged exposure to asbestos can result in conditions such as mesothelioma.
